Deep conversations strengthen social relationships, yet people may avoid deep conversations because they expect them to be less pleasant than they are. Ten experiments find that deep conversations between strangers feel less awkward and create more happiness than people expect. Miscalibrated expectations may cause people to have overly shallow conversations.
