Risky Business: The Challenge of Communicating Health-Related Risk

American adults (N = 141) were surveyed to determine their preference for and performance with various formats of expressing medical risk. Participants expressed equivalent attitudes toward frequency and percentage formats but worked significantly better with percentages, suggesting that frequencies should be avoided in communicating with the general public.
