Unhealthy Parental Attachment Predicts Development of Maladaptive Schemas

We examined parental attachment and personal control schemas. Quality of relationship with both parents is a protective factor against schemas of self-control. Mother's facilitation of independence and father's supportiveness were risk factors for schemas of self-control. Findings suggest that a balance of love and boundaries are ideal for healthy self-control.
