The Relationship between Burnout and Empathy: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract
In a meta-analysis of existing literature (k=71) we found that cognitive empathy and empathic concern predicted lower burnout, whereas emotional contagion predicted higher burnout. This trend was consistent for three common burnout symptoms. This meta-analysis serves to clarify and correct the myth that empathic people are particularly susceptible to burnout.
