Clarifying the Relationship between Early Emotion Experience and Adult Mental Health

Adults' retrospective reports of their childhood emotion regulation strategies and their parents' emotion-related behaviors demonstrated maladaptive childhood emotion regulation to be associated with continued poor adult emotion regulation and increased depressive symptoms. Results indicate that early emotion experiences can influence later emotion regulation styles and adult mental health outcomes.
