Assessing the Nature and Scope of Officer-Involved Lethal Shootings of Unarmed Citizens

Analyses of 2016-2018 lethal shootings of unarmed citizens by law enforcement (N = 193) revealed such events comprised 6-7% of all officer-involved lethal shootings that occurred each year, frequently involved fleeing suspects, were infrequently captured by body- or dash-cams, and increasingly involved decedents exhibiting signs of mental illness.
