Harnessing the Placebo Effect to Enhance Emotion Regulation Effectiveness and Choice

We utilized the placebo effect to improve an emotion regulation strategy, namely, attentional distraction. Placebo-induced expectations boosted the effectiveness of distraction in reducing self-reported fear of pain. Moreover, participants showed increased behavioral preference for distraction following the placebo manipulation, when regulating both fear of pain and fear of unpleasant pictures.
