The Game of Gaslighting: When Intrinsic Desires Are Moralized

Abstract

Gaslighting is psychological mistreatment where victims are made to seem crazy. The study suggests that gaslighting is damaging when perpetrators utilize motivating rewards against victims to alter their reality. Using employee promotion as a moralized mechanism to detect how gaslighting occurs, this article illustrates how abusive supervisors can misuse promotion.
