Adversity has complex effects—both positive and negative—on functioning. This symposium highlights recent findings on adversity’s favorable effects on compassion, the beneficial effects of natural disaster on social and psychological functioning, and the mixed effects of cancer treatment on psychosocial resources and health behaviors.
