Dynamic psychotherapy was once the dominant approach to treatment but fell out of favor because its adherents shunned empirical evaluation in randomized controlled trials. A new breed of investigators has streamlined both theory and therapy and shown that it can be efficacious in the treatment of a variety of disorders.
