Dealing with Others' Misery: Does Perspective Taking Help or Hurt?

Much research has shown the advantages of perspective taking in that it elicits empathy, prosocial behavior and support, which may help others in dealing with negative emotions. However, in this symposium we discuss findings showing that perspective taking not always has positive outcome.
