Instrumental Diversity Rhetoric: Paradoxical Effects on Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
A new rhetoric –diversity as instrumental– is prevalent in organizations, schools, and society. This symposium investigates its consequences. Four talks report that instrumental diversity rhetoric creates performance contingencies in managers’ commitment to diversity, reduces support for companies’ diversity initiatives, preferentially attracts Whites to universities, and undermines perceptions of value sacredness.
