The Many Meanings of Human Laughter

Laughter is one of humanity’s most compelling and least understood behaviors. This research explores the ambiguity versus specificity of this emotion expression. Our findings suggest that laughter does not carry an intrinsic meaning and that its interpretation is largely determined by the surrounding context.
