Abstract

When an idea provokes disgust, condemnation (of persons and acts) tends to follow. Prior research suggests that disgust predicts more politically conservative stances, leading to more polarization. In two studies, we show the reverse -- that disgust can reduce political polarization, by moving conservatives’ views closer to the center.
