Abstract

Participants (N=610) read about a person (“Jane”) experiencing one of four outcomes: depression, “normal mood,” obesity, or “normal weight.” Asked to rate the strength of genes’ causal role for their assigned outcome, participants gave significantly weaker genetic attribution ratings depression and obesity, compared to normal mood or normal weight.
