Winning Isn’t Everything: Ostracism Thwarts the Effects of Positive Social Interdependence

Abstract
Experimental results showed that ostracized participants reported less belonging, self-esteem, control, and meaningful existence compared to included participants; they also reported more negative mood and rated co-players more negatively. Results suggest that ostracism – ignoring or excluding another – undermines the effects of achieving positively interdependent – cooperative - goals.
