Abstract

Depending on the non-mathematical world knowledge evoked by a problem statement, different mathematical relations can be made salient in the encoded representation. We tested this hypothesis with a problem recognition task following a problem solving task. Participants’ performance varied depending on the world knowledge imbued in the problems.
