Abstract
We show that preferences for a variety of stimuli are shaped by categorization. This is because categorization changes the stimulus’ fluency and familiarity. We explain classic phenomena, like “the beauty in averageness effect” or “the uncanny valley effect”, and demonstrate new phenomena, like “the ugliness-in-averageness” effect.
