Abstract

We found that although the recognition capacity for objects drawn from distinct categories was massive, that for faces was only 10 and remained remarkably robust across conditions (N > 1000). The seemingly defective face recognition performance nevertheless surpassed performance for single-category items with comparable physical characteristics (isometry, topology, and entropy).
