Abstract

Object substitution masking is a type of masking where target visibility plummets when surrounded by a four-dot mask with delayed offset. However, visibility improves at prolonged mask durations. Here we show this recovery is contingent on target-mask dissimilarity of semantic, not perceptual, features supporting a top-down influence on visual perception.
