Abstract

Kohut’s (1977) Self Psychology suggests that some nightmares may be an attempt to put images to the experience of self-fragmentation, referred to as self-state dreams. Consistent with Kohut’s theorizations, the current study found significant relationships between nightmare frequency and self-psychology related variables: self-fragmentation, identity, affect regulation, and self-esteem.
