Testing Perceived Burdensomeness and Thwarted Belongingness As Mechanisms of a Text Messaging Intervention to Prevent Suicide Among Soldiers and Marines

This study evaluated psychosocial antecedents of suicidality as mediators of treatment effects from a clinical trial of caring contacts to prevent suicide among active duty Soldiers and Marines. Thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness were associated with attempted suicide and suicidal ideation, but did not mediate treatment effects as hypothesized.
