Abstract
We explore a key psychological mechanism through which sacred animals are deemed inedible by members of a faith. People grant greater mental life to animals deemed sacred, as compared to non-sacred inedible animals and livestock (Study 1). Furthermore, mind perception statistically mediates the effect of sacredness on edibility (Study 2).
