The Influence of Surprising Stimuli on Event Memory

Abstract

We examined the influence of a surprising stimulus on participants’ memory accuracy for details of a first-person perspective film, manipulating both the sensory modality and story relevance of the stimulus. The results revealed differential effects for visual and auditory stimuli on participants’ accuracy and demonstrated the importance of story relevance.
