Abstract

In a representative sample from the population, childhood emotional and physical neglect were related to bodyweight in adulthood. In women, they were associated with severe obesity. In men, both forms of maltreatment were associated with being underweight. Only in women, mental distress mediated the effects of emotional neglect on bodyweight.
