Abstract

Evidence for unconscious conditioning, such as greater accuracy in classifying USs preceded by masked CSs, derives from non-zero intercepts when regressing accuracy on awareness. We show that—even after correcting for measurement error in predictors—the existence of unconscious conditioning stands or falls with the variables’ relationship, reliabilities, and distributions.
