Abstract

Wells & Lindsay (1985) speculated that eyewitnesses often adopt a relative judgment (RJ) strategy on lineup tests, comparing lineup members to determine which most resembles the culprit. They claimed that, compared to an absolute judgment (AJ) strategy, the RJ strategy promotes misidentifications of innocent suspects. Our experiments challenge that claim.
