The Effect of Preferred Background Music on Sustained Attention

Abstract

Although many people listen to music while performing tasks that require sustained attention, the literature is inconclusive about its effects. The present research investigated the effect of preferred background music compared to silence and showed that music increased task-focus and decreased mind-wandering on a low-demanding sustained attention task.
