Abstract

Using restricted environmental stimulation (REST) and the hollow mask illusion, we observed the effects of altered mental states on the neural pathways of face perception. Individuals that underwent REST used top-down processing significantly more when the stimulus was right-side up and when they viewed it with one eye open.
