Examining Method Effect in Self-Report Measures of Learning Engagement

Abstract

The present study examined the method effect in a self-report measure of learning engagement. Using a large and diverse U.S. sample, it found that negatively worded items contributed variance to scores beyond what is attributable to the construct of engagement. Therefore, negatively worded items should be avoided in future research.
