Abstract

We investigated whether literacy acquisition bolsters a reading-related ability: rapid, automatic naming of visual items (RAN). We tested literate and illiterate adults on a serial RAN task. Literate people performed better than illiterates in speeded naming of objects and colors, suggesting that reading experience enhances faster lexical access and retrieval.
