Abstract

We developed a computational model of mental effort allocation during value-based decision-making. In principle, effort increases choice confidence but is costly; thus, allocated effort should strike an optimal balance. Our model predicts non-trivial relationships between choice-induced preference changes, confidence, and reaction times, which we validated with a behavioral experiment.
