Who Is Getting Ahead? the Universality of Lay Beliefs in Merit

Who gets ahead in life? We highlight the critical role played by perceived legitimacy of the causes of hierarchical advancement, namely merit's centrality, in sustaining economic inequality. We use multi-level perspective, large-scale survey from 40 countries, and laboratory experiment to establish a causal frame-work for reduced support for redistribution policies.
