Abstract

We examined the temporal bidirectional relationships between withdrawal symptoms and smoking relapse because evidence suggests that they are multidetermined. The results support a negative reinforcement conceptualization of nicotine dependence, and the bidirectional relationships indicates that struggling with quitting smoking leads to significant withdrawal symptoms that do not quickly resolve.
