Abstract

Past research has primarily focused on how individuals can avoid temptations; relatively little is known about how they react after succumbing to temptations. In 4 studies, we provided experimental and correlational evidence that succumbing to temptation activates a justification process that reduces one’s commitment to the ongoing pursuit.
