Abstract

In free recall, reading items aloud improves memory compared to reading them silently. In 4 experiments, we extended this production effect to immediate serial recall. In mixed-list, but not in pure lists, produced items were better recalled than items read silently or items read silently with a concomitant auditory presentation.
