When Leaders Ask Questions: The Effect of Competence Penalties and Humility Premiums

Abstract

Using a questions-as-information approach, we find that questions are more likely to lower perceptions of leader competence when leader competence is doubted more, and that perceptions of leader humility increase as a result. The positive effects of humility premiums are capable of neutralizing the negative effects of competence penalties.
