Abstract

We examined cross-cultural variations in maternal psychological control and expression of emotions in 216 families and with preschool-aged children. Chinese and Japanese mothers reported higher levels of psychological control and lower expressiveness than US mothers. Across all cultures, psychological control was associated with children’s mood lability and lower happiness.
