Abstract

Data from 1,393,175 8th, 10th, and 12th grade American students drawn from 1989 through 2016 indicate significant increases in depressive symptoms starting in 2014 in comparison to historical averages. Socioeconomic disparities in depressive symptoms also grew in recent years, with patterns stronger among older than younger adolescents.
