Abstract

Using data from 215,885 children across 62 countries, this study examined the effects of corporal punishment on child socioemotional development. Results from a three-level Bayesian regression analysis showed that spanking was negatively associated with 3- and 4-year-old children’s socioemotional development. Findings elucidate the detrimental impact of physical punishment worldwide.
