Abstract

Most participants in four smile-solicitation studies recalled a specific incident. Solicited participants responded with anger, disgust, and surprise, women more strongly than men. Women were solicited more than then men; men solicited more than women. When social status was perceived as unequal, solicitors were perceived as having higher social status.
