Abstract

Two experiments tested the hypothesis that threatening people's self-esteem promotes transphobia. State self-esteem was manipulated by repeated subliminal priming of disparaging phrases. Results show that participants were indeed more transphobic in the low self-esteem condition, but, contrary to our prediction, the transgender man was less accepted than the transgender woman.
