Abstract

We tested the hypothesis that meritocratic ideology undermines women’s feminist identification, in so far as meritocracy focuses on personal responsibility to overcome obstacles and deemphasizes structural barriers to women’s achievement. Results show that priming meritocracy (vs. non-priming) lowers women’s feminist identification, and the perceived importance of remedial collective actions.
