Abstract

Social influence theory reframes aggression as use of coercive power. Experimental power manipulations are associated with social approach, but social anxiety induces social avoidance. Participants reported anxiety, were randomly assigned to experimental power conditions, and responded to scenarios involving hostile provocations. Observed main effects linked power, anxiety, and aggressive responses.
