“Confessions of Conflict”: Experimental Approaches to Reducing Sectarian Hate Speech and Prejudice Online and in the Field

Through a nationally representative survey experiment in Lebanon and online experiment across the Arab Twittersphere, we evaluate the effectiveness of anti-bias interventions in reducing sectarian hate speech. Elite-endorsed messages priming common religious identity were most effective in reducing hate speech online and increasing support for counter-sectarian messages among Lebanese citizens.
