The Dark Side of Empathy: A Behavioral Investigation of Third Party Vengeance

Abstract

The present study employed a behavioral aggression task to examine whether people will seek vengeance on behalf of an unknown victim. Although results did not indicate that participants exhibited the expected vengeance seeking behavior on the victim’s behalf, cognitive empathy significantly moderated the positive association found between psychopathy and aggression.
