Abstract

Longitudinal and cross-sectional methodologies revealed that hosting a homeless encampment for 3 months on a college campus reduced students’ dehumanization of homeless individuals. Students who had the least prior experience interacting with the homeless community showed the greatest change. Limitations to enhanced perceptions of humanity through proximity are also identified.
