Abstract
We show that participating in a preliminary contest reduces prosociality in an unrelated situation. Moreover, this effect was found to be mediated by lower levels of empathy towards the target of the prosocial behavior. Additionally, when the prosocial behavior involved monetary decisions winners were less prosocial than losers.
