Abstract

How does social relationship knowledge shape trust? Here, participants played repeated trust games with members of a fictive online community. Results indicated that knowledge of the company that others keep both biases initial judgments of strangers’ trustworthiness and shapes how we learn about others’ trustworthiness from direct experience.
