Abstract

Social status (combined prestige + wealth) has unclear associations with altruism; associations with wealth tend negative. Prestige (academe) was positively associated with altruistic choices (notifying rather than ‘ghosting’ rejected job applicants) although academic hirers were more selective. Prestige and wealth (components of status) may have opposite associations with altruism.
